Devizes to Westminster Canoe Race 2023

This years race was sadly cancelled for most paddlers due to dangerous conditions. However, for a few hand picked entrants who were experienced enough to take on the course, gym owner Gary (who’s now completed the race 7 times) and paddling partner Ashley Cain (who 10 weeks prior had never sat in a kayak before) were cleared to race! They were aiming to finish within the 24 hour mark and ended up smashing their goal by finishing in 23 hrs and 20 minutes.

The race is 125 miles long and has 77 portages. The first 52 miles are along the Kennet and Avon Canal to Reading, the next 55 miles are on the River Thames to Teddington. The final 17 mile section is on the tidal portion of the Thames. Finishing just downstream of Westminster Bridge in central London, opposite the Houses of Parliament. The race has been held annually over the Easter Weekend since 1948.

The race is a severe test of skill, physical and mental stamina and planning which produces a memorable sense of achievement for those successfully completing it.

A special thank you to their support crew as they wouldn’t have completed the race without you (you know who you are). Support crews play a crucial role in the race. As entrants are paddling non stop they need to be feed, watered and even dressed throughout the day & night.
