Charity Boxing Night 2009

On the 16 May 2009, Target Fitness and Phillip Graham Service Management (PGSM) organized their first Charity Boxing Night to raise money for Children with Leukaemia. Their goal is to create a safe haven for children with different types of cancers to be able to play in a safe environment together. The very nature of their treatments means they are more susceptible to common illnesses which could be life threatening to them.

This was initially inspired by, Gary and Leanne after their daughter Madison, now 4, was recently diagnosed with Leukaemia at the young age of 2. Throughout Madison’s treatment, her parents have struggled to find such an environment for their daughter to play in safely and not expose her to unnecessary risks that could affect her health. As a result of this, Gary and Leanne have focused on providing a play barn dedicated to Children with Cancers, like Leukaemia, so that they are able to have a clean and sterile environment in which to play and exercise in.

In order to fund this project, Gary Johnson of Target Fitness and Phillip Graham of (PGSM) have jointly been organizing a number of Charity events similar to the Boxing night. The last boxing event took place on the 16 May last year. It was the first boxing night Target and PGSM had organized and it was well supported with it selling out very quickly. The night included a champagne reception for all guests followed by 8 bouts of fantastic boxing from both ex-professional and amateur boxers and a sumptuous 3-course dinner. Followed by an auction and a disco that lasted until the early hours of the morning. The famous boxer and commentator, Barry McGuigan gave his support to the event by attending the evening and presented the trophies to the Boxers. Barry has a personal experience of the devastating effects that cancer and subsequent treatment can mean to a child as his own daughter had Leukaemia as a child and is now fully recovered and following a successful career as an actress. From this one event they raised an amazing £26,000.

The owners of Tewinbury Farm, Debbie and Vaughan Williams also have a son who recently suffered from Leukaemia. He is now thankfully clear and the couple have been very supportive towards this cause and have provided a fabulous venue for these events to be held at. All the money raised from these charity events goes towards the play barn that will hopefully be built at Tewinbury Farm, Hertfordshire. Target and PGSM are currently finalizing the arrangements for their second boxing night, which is taking on the 20 February 2010!
